Saturday september 27th the historical Ponchielli Theatre in Cremona was the scenario for a concert of the prestigious Fine Arts Quartet: founded in Chigago in 1946 it's one of the most important quartets in the world, with a great tradition of succesful concerts and recordings and an attitude towards teaching to young musicians. The Fine Arts Quartet is going to stay in Cremona for an entire week, during which they will share their great experience with five young quartets in a master class in residence. They will also take a public audition with the precious historic instruments of the exhibition "Cremona 1730-1750: nell'olimpo della liuteria" - string instruments made by masters like Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù. Up to october 19th Cremona is going to remember is musical attitude with a series of concerts, exhibitions, meetings and, of course, the 21st edition of "Cremona Mondomusica"the most important fair of handcrafted musical instruments.
Saturday evening we listened a great concert. The opening was with Haydn, Quartet op.77 n.1, followed by Sostakovic, Quartet n.1 op.49. In the second part of the concert we listened Quartet n.2 op.22 by Cajkovskij. The Fine Arts Quartet played impeccably, with a pure and smooth sound, a real delight for the listener! All the four members are excellent artists, we were particularly impressed by the first violin Ralph Evans who played with superbe technique and enchanting, natural musicality. Brilliant individual playing, long partnership, humilty, devotion to music: without question they are all ingredients that can be find in the Fine Arts Quartet. At the end of the concert they also played two encores, precious gifts of their art: the last movement of Haydn's Quartet op.64 n.5 and Glazunov's Orientale.
